During the 2018-2019 school year, 450 children aged 6-17 will learn to code in the CoderDojo North Bucharest workshops, supported by Telekom Romania Foundation and Coder Dojo Association. The workshops are free of charge and take place on the last Saturday of each month, except for the legal holidays or school holidays when the workshops are reprogrammed, according Telekom Romania Foundation. The first workshops will take place on Saturday, September 29, starting at 10 o'clock, in Bucharest, Băneasa Business & Technology Park, 42-44 Bucureşti-Ploieşti Road, building A, 2nd floor.
At this year's edition, participants were able to choose between different subjects, depending on their interests, age and level of knowledge: Arduino, Algorithm, Java, Khan for beginners, Minecraft Education Edition, Scratch for advanced, Scratch for beginners. 22 volunteer mentors, who will prepare the young students for the jobs of the future and for an increasingly digitized world, will coordinate the activities.
"6 years ago we started this initiative and we are happy to see that things have significantly evolved, and the number of participants doubles every year. More and more parents are aware of the importance and benefits of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - STEM activities in children's education, even more as statistics show that the jobs in the technical fields are on an upward trend, and the qualified human resources for these fields are increasingly limited. This means that STEM education becomes an essential aspect of preparing young generations for the future. It is our responsibility to support and encourage these trends, including through quality non-formal education programs", stated Ruxandra Vodă, President, Telekom Romania Foundation.
CoderDojo is an international movement, which started in Ireland in 2011, with the main purpose to create an informal space for kids that are interested in discovering the world of programming, through regular sessions outside the school. At CoderDojo, children learn to code, to develop websites, applications, programs, games, and more. Dojos are initiated, conducted and mentored by volunteers. CoderDojo turns programming into a social and fun experience.
CoderDojo Bucharest North, supported by Telekom Romania Foundation, is the first CoderDojo workshop organized in Romania, where the program now counts 15 locations.
