Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC) has announced the incorporation of three new IBM Power 9 racks with a with a peak performance of 1.5 petaflops into its MareNostrum 4 supercomputer, according Telecompaper. With this incorporation, BSC said it’s looking to explore the technology’s potential to accelerate Artificial Intelligence–based research. The EUR 34 million MareNostrum 4 began operations last year and will have a performance capacity of 13.7 petaflops when completed.
 
With the new racks MareNostrum 4 becomes the first centre in Europe to offer access to the same technologies as IBM’s newly unveiled Summit supercomputer located in Oak Ridge (Tennessee), set to be the most powerful computer in the world.
