COSMOTE Romania is pleased to announce that, as a first on the Romanian market, the customers with compatible handsets will soon be able to access the Internet from their mobile phones using IPv6. Romtelecom also made network tests which show its network's capability to provide ipv6 transit and DNS services for the wholesale customers. The company is also working to provide in the following period, the same facility for its residential and business customers, whose terminals are compatible with the IPv6 protocol.
On 8 June, 2011, World IPv6 Day, Google, Facebook, Yahoo!, Akamai and Limelight Networks will be amongst some of the major organisations that will offer their content over IPv6 for a 24-hour "test flight". The goal of the Test Flight Day is to motivate organizations across the industry – Internet service providers, hardware makers, operating system vendors and web companies – to prepare their services for IPv6 to ensure a successful transition as IPv4 addresses run out.
Being part of the task force of Deutsche Telekom, COSMOTE Romania worked intensely in order to be able to provide the customers an improved navigation experience through a new generation internet protocol. The company is pleased to announce that the tests for IPv6 have been successfully completed and soon our customers will be able to enjoy the enhanced benefits this technology has to offer such as: native multicasting, security and improved mobility.
Romtelecom actively participates in the World IPv6 Day building a test website especially for this event. The website will be available for 24 hours on June 8, 2011, from 00:00 to 23:59 EST. Anyone with IPv6 enabled terminal and proper network connectivity will be able to check IPv6 accessibility at ipv6.romtelecom.net.
IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is a new generation of communication protocol used in internet, that shall supplement and eventually supersede protocol IPv4 used today. IPv6 addresses several drawbacks of IPv4, particularly limited number of remaining free addresses to support continuing growth of internet as open innovation platform.
IPv6, besides new and wider address space, enables and supports optimization of addressing plan and therefore contributes to stability increase, supports security and provides new dimension to internet addressing and communication.
COSMOTE Romania and Romtelecom are gradually becoming ready for IPv6 deployment to ensure smooth and failure-free transition to IPv6 for its customers. The solution will provide both versions of IP protocol, IPv4 an IPv6 at the same time based on dual stack solution and dual stack bearer.
