EADS Defence and Communications Systems is providing support worth € 20,000 for the renovation of a Romanian school that was damaged by floods at the end of July.
The help will go to the elementary school in the Romanian village of Branceni in the Teleorman region, which is attended by 200 pupils. With the help of the donation, new furnishings can immediately be acquired, thus enabling the children to have a smooth start to the school year in mid-September. In all, eleven classrooms and the neighbouring nursery require completely new furnishings.
During the devastating floods in Romania in July this year, at least 23 people lost their lives and over 2,300 homes were destroyed. The devastation also extended to many roads, bridges, railway tracks, as well as gas and water pipes. The total damage suffered throughout the country is estimated at over one billion euros.
"Through this donation, which is being channelled directly to the flood victims, we at EADS wish to offer our assistance and demonstrate that we are prepared to assume responsibility for the population of a country where we are engaged in business activities," says Dr. Markus Hellenthal, Head of the Homeland Security Line of Business at EADS DCS.
In Romania, EADS DCS is currently setting up a border security system, the first phase of which will be completed in time for the country's accession to the EU in 2007.
