The US government has offered a 90-day reprieve to Huawei and its customers and suppliers in the US, according Telecompaper. Shortly after putting the Chinese company on a list of groups banned from doing business with the US, the Bureau of Industry and Security issued an order suspending much of the new requirements for three months.
US businesses will not be required to obtain a special licence from the Bureau during this period in order to do certain types of business with Huawei. During the 90 days to 19 August, they may order parts for existing networks, provide support to existing Huawei devices, issue security updates related to Huawei products, and contribute to work with Huawei necessary for 5G standardisation.
The order covers Huawei and 68 of its affiliates that were placed on the Department of Commerce's 'Entity List' due to national security concerns. The final order restricting their ability to buy from US companies will be published 21 May and immediately affect any new products from Huawei.
The 90-day reprieve is designed to protect US companies relying on existing Huawei products, especially mobile phone users and rural broadband network operators. The Department of Commerce said this will give them time to make alternative arrangements and for the government to consider long-term alternatives.
