Other features of the "First" ARD channel: test your accuracy

With plenty of opportunities to get actively involved, visitors to IFA can also experience some of the shows and series, sports and talks available on the "First" channel in the ARD Hall 2.2. There will be live contributions by presenters and some of the cast of such popular German television series as "Tatort", "Polizeiruf 110", "Verbotene Liebe", "Rote Rosen", "Der Dicke", "Donna Leon", "Lindenstrasse" and "Grosstadtrevier". Actors from the early evening series, which comes under the general heading of "Heiter bis tödlich" (From humourous to deadly) on the "First" channel such as"Fuchs und Gans", "Akte Ex" and "Hauptstadtrevier" will also be appearing. Friederike Kempter and Matthias Klimsa will be happy to meet with the public and answer their questions. ARD stars will be talking about their work and signing autographs. Fans can also take part via Twitter and Facebook.

One of the main features on the stand will be of particular interest to sports enthusiasts, with the presentation of the World Biathlon Championships 2013. A simulation is being provided to show visitors the degree of concentration needed by athletes on the biathlon shooting range in order to be able to hit such tiny targets. Everyone who takes part will be able to take home a picture of their efforts. The latest trailers and details about the early evening crime thriller series beginning in September are just some of the attractions of the "Heiter bis tödlich" stand, which also includes a shooting gallery, and here too the emphasis is on accuracy. On the "Brisant" (Controversy) sofa visitors can meet the presenters Mareile Höppner and Kamilla Senjo and, in this studio setting, try their skills as presenters of controversial topics, and take a copy of their efforts home on a DVD.

n-tv as a cross-media information service provider

At IFA 2012 the occupants of the halls on the Exhibition Grounds will again include n-tv. News, stock market reports, news specials and the n-tv advice programme are being produced and broadcast from the n-tv studio in Hall 23b, Stand 104 at IFA. Visitors to the fair can watch presenters, technicians and camera teams at work for a genuinely live television experience.

Until 5 September n-tv will be broadcasting from Berlin each day, with hourly news at the weekend (1/2 Sept.) between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and on weekdays (31 Aug. and 3 to 5 Sept.) the Telebörse (stock market programme) at 12.10, 1.10 and 2 .10 p.m., and with News Specials at 12.30, 1.30 and 2.30 p.m. On the evening preceding the start of the fair Jennifer Knäble will be reporting from the red carpet at the big IFA Gala. Under the skilled supervision of the newsreaders Annett Möller and Isabelle Körner there will also be opportunities for visitors to try their skills on camera. But n-tv has much more to offer than just television, as can be seen at IFA 2012. In Hall 23b all the different ways can be seen by which n-tv news can be received by viewers and users. In the fair studio all the various n-tv apps for smartphones and tablets can be tried out, along with n-tv digital text (HbbTV). Other highlights on the news broadcaster’s stand consist of an opportunity, using photos, for visitors to participate in the successful n-tv PR campaign, and there will be an appearance by the network reporter Moritz Wedel, as well as a news quiz.

rbb introduces free ARD children’s app for the first time

As of 13 August 2012 new programme structures have been introduced by rbb Television, along with new formats and a new design, and its viewers can now obtain a close-up look at their station in action. In the ARD Halle 2.2 the people of Berlin and Brandenburg can obtain their own personal television-themed photographs in the style of the current advertising campaign, to take home with them. During the daily autograph sessions well known faces and presenters from rbb Television will also be answering questions from the public. Members of the rbb services editorial team will also respond to queries about new and well-known programmes. There will also be plenty of games for people to get involved in, and lots of opportunities to win prizes.

For visitors with a technical interest there are opportunities on the rbb stand in Hall 2.2 to subject the innovations on display there to exhaustive practical tests. For example, a second-screen application can be used as a simple way of receiving rbb text HD. This can be done using a mobile terminal, either in the form of a smartphone or a tablet PC, and offers a number of additional features too. The rbb Mediatheque is another eye-catching feature on the rbb stand. The "Sandmann app" from rbb, MDR and KiKA can be seen there for the first time. The first free app for children from ARD will be released after the fair for iPhone and iPad as well as for Android smartphones and tablet PCs.

Fritz presents the Neuen DeutschPoeten concept

In the summer of 2010 Fritz, part of rbb, presented the Neue DeutschPoeten concept for the first time in a sell-out show at the Astra in Berlin. In 2011 the performances took place against the unusual background of a sold-out Summer Garden on the Exhibition Grounds at IFA. In what must be the capital’s finest open-air arena, in glorious sunshine, 13,000 fans enjoyed the Neue DeutschPoeten performances again last year with Clueso & Band, Wir Sind Helden, Philipp Poisel, Marteria, Bosse, Kraftklub, Andreas Bourani and Max Prosa. "Once again Fritz Radio proved not only that it is ‘always searching for new talent’ but also that it knows how to present the talent that it finds in the best possible light. We are eagerly waiting to see what next year will bring" wrote Lausitzer Rundschau online last year. And now the time is here: With the slogan "Die Neuen DeutschPoeten" Fritz is presenting musicians and bands performing in German for the third time on 1 September 2012 at the IFA Summer Garden. The line-up this year is again an outstanding one, with singers Tim Bendzko, Max Herre & Freunde, MIA., rapper Marsimoto, Thees Uhlmann, The Koletzkis, Tiemo Hauer and the band Vierkanttretlager. Comperes for the afternoon are Bosse and Hadnet Tesfai.

With its location in the ARD Hall, No. 2.2, Germany’s national radio service again emphasises its membership of the group of public broadcasting networks. Visitors to IFA can obtain information on the stand about three outstanding, national broadcasting services: Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandradio Kultur and DRadio Wissen. Each day at 2 p.m. Christian Bienert, presenter of "Sonntagsrätsel" on Deutschlandradio Kultur, will be taking the time to chat with the public and answer their questions. Between 11 a.m. and midday on Friday (31 Aug.) the children’s programme "Kakadu" from Deutschlandradio Kultur will be the guest on the ARD stage, where live recordings will be made of "Quasseltag". It can be heard on the same day from 1.30 to 2 p.m. on Deutschlandradio Kultur. The presenter Tim Wiese and children’s reporters Jule and Emilia will be providing coverage of activities at IFA and interviewing a celebrity.

There will also be an opportunity for visitors to the fair to experience terrestrial digital radio on the Deutschlandradio stand in Hall 2.2. They can find out how to receive the three services from the national radio network, what additional facilities are available, and what the latest receivers look like. Those who are interested can try out applications from Deutschlandradio for the iPhone, iPad and other smartphones, take part in social media activities from DRadio Wissen and follow them at the same time on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

Antenne Café in the IFA Summer Garden

It has now become something of a tradition: the Antenne Café in the IFA Summer Garden. Nationally and internationally known artists will be performing here in these relaxed surroundings. This year they will include such stars as Heinz Rudolf Kunze, Gunter Gabriel and Maite Kelly. Visitors to IFA can enjoy the lively and varied programme, brought to them as in previous years by Antenne Brandenburg, either over coffee and cakes directly in front of the stage, or on the lawn or a bench. Each day during the fair (except Saturday, 1 Sept.) at 1.30 p.m. Inka Bause, Kira Herbrand and Jürgen Karney will be inviting visitors to spend an entertaining afternoon watching the show.

VIVA reports on the iCandy Stage at IFA 2012

The organisers of the iCandy Stage in Hall 7.2A have again provided extensive technical facilities for the music acts and other talented performers. This continues to be the venue for many leading performers and newcomers, who will be capturing the atmosphere of the world’s largest trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances as well as delighting their many fans.

Artists without a recording contract and who want to grab the last available slot on the big iCandy stage can apply to take part in the iCandy Sound Contest. Internet users were asked to cast their votes online for their favourites to determine the best eight from a shortlist selected by a panel of experts. And the Winner is: "Schreiber" from Hamburg/ Bad Segeberg. Their big chance now awaits them on 31 August when they will be performing in front of a large audience on the iCandy stage. The winners will receive fan packages from iCandy and are automatically nominated for the finale of the YOU Song Contest at the YOU Youth Fair. This gives them a chance of winning one of the highly sought-after EMMAwards at the ELDANI MEDIA NIGHT, as well as attractive label promotion and booking contracts.

As at last year’s event, all the organisational aspects are in the hands of trendwerk77 GmbH of Mülheim an der Ruhr. The stage programme and special events on the Saturday (iCandy M-Night) and the Tuesday (Music meets Talk) are the responsibility of friends4bands and ELDANI MEDIA. On the Friday (31 Aug.) and Saturday (1 Sept.) VIVA.tv in Hall 7.2A will be making recordings and reporting from the iCandy Stage about the iCandy Sound Contest and the iCandy M-Night.

The latest digital services from the regional broadcasting stations

On the "Digital World" stand in the ARD hall 2.2 the regional broadcasting stations will be presenting their modern ranges of radio services with accompanying, supplementary information in the form of text and images, along with TPEG (Transport Protocol Experts’ Group). This service of the future for people on the move not only provides drivers with more accurate and extensive traffic reports but also ensures enhanced safety in everyday life. Experts will be at IFA to illustrate the advantages of digital radio as well as advising visitors about aspects or home or mobile reception. Together with the Institute for Broadcasting Technology and with the support of the microchip manufacturer Frontier Silicon, ARD will be presenting one of its future digital radio services: the interactive slide show. This enables individuals to store and use the images broadcast during the course of a programme.

The HbbTV standard (Hybrid broadcast broadband TV) combines the traditional viewing experience with on-demand content. Trade visitors and interested members of the public will find plenty of information and advice about applications based on the HbbTV standard at the "Digital World", where they can also experience the many additional editorial items available on offer there. Among the innovations on show are an improved ARD EPG with a completely new appearance and direct link with the mediatheques, as well as "second screen" applications on the basis of the HbbTV standard. This is the term chosen by experts for the use and networking of additional devices such as tablet computers in combination with televisions. Several times each day the rbb presenter Gerald Meyer and guests will be at the "Digital Arena" to conduct a tour of discovery of the worlds of digital radio and television.

Walking Acts from KiKA

Main themes at IFA to 31 august

Dr. Rainer Hecker: IFA continues its upward course

For the organisers of IFA, Gesellschaft für Unterhaltungs- und Kommunikationselektronik (gfu), it is already apparent that orders with a value exceeding 3.7 billion euros will be placed at the event this year. The reasons for this assertion were given by Dr. Rainer Hecker, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the gfu, at yesterday’s opening press conference of IFA: “IFA takes place at the right time of the year and, driven by innovation, it is a unique fair for the trade and the general public alike.” In Germany alone the market for CE products is likely to increase by 4% to 29 billion euros this year. “And this is despite difficult market conditions which are affected by the debt crisis in many countries,” Hecker stated. He put the increase in the volume of the worldwide market at 1,100 bi. US$, which is still +2%. The most impressive increase was in the worldwide sales of 3D televisions, a total of 43 mi. (+117%), followed by 106 mi. tablet PCs (+68%) and 700 mi. smartphones (+62%). At 232 mi. the number of TV sets sold only accounted for a +1.8% increase, compared with the +48% represented by the 89 mi. smart TVs. There is also a very evident trend towards larger screen diagonals of 50 inches and more, 15 mi. of which are expected to be sold this year (+25%). “Thus the trends at this year’s IFA are connectivity for smart TVs, tablet PCs, smartphones with higher resolution, as well as HD, 3D, 4K and OLEDs”, explained the chairman of the gfu Supervisory Board.

Dr. Zinkann: “Positive assessment” of the global home appliance industry

The Chairman of the ZVEI Home Electrical Appliance Product Division, Dr. Reinhard Zinkann, is viewing the worldwide future for this sector with restrained optimism. During the IFA 2012 opening press conference on Wednesday he reported that sales in Europe during the first half of the year were slightly lower than in the equivalent period last year. But while sales declined in Western Europe they were increasing in Eastern Europe. “However, overall the dynamic pace of expansion has slowed”, he added. Asia continues to be a growth market and is steadily developing, but here too the process has been less vigorous. China occupied a special place in his remarks: “With a twelve per cent share of the world market the Chinese market is as large as that of the United States”, according to Zinkann. While results in the USA remain stagnant, Latin America is experiencing growth, with double-digit increases in Brazil. “The European debt crisis is a major burden”, the ZVEI chairman admitted, “but the home appliance industry is performing well.” Although he does not expect any change in the world market during the second half of 2012, nevertheless he remains positive in his assessment.

Dr. Christian Göke: Global importance of IFA continues to increase

The continuous rise in the numbers of trade visitors and in the display area offer proof of the growing worldwide importance of IFA as a trend-setting trade fair that accurately indicates the state of the industry around the world. This was pointed out by the COO of Messe Berlin, Dr. Christian Göke, at the opening press conference of this year’s IFA. A poll conducted last year by Euronics revealed that, when faced by an economic crisis, 15.3 of the population would make savings on vacations and 12.5 per cent on attending cultural events, while only 2.4 per cent would be prepared to cut back on home appliances, 2.1 per cent on health care products, and 7.9 per cent on consumer electronics, which are the three focal points of IFA. Demand on the Exhibition Grounds at IFA is so great that it has already been necessary to erect temporary halls, and Göke announced the construction of a new building, which will be in place by 2014 to provide additional space.

Siemens: Energy-efficiency meets user friendliness

The home appliances being exhibited by Siemens-Electrogeräte GmbH at IFA 2012 are remarkable not only on account of their energy efficiency but also because they make “a clear statement about individual lifestyles”, according to Roland Hagenbucher, General Manager of  the Home Appliance Division of Siemens-Electrogeräte. With their 48 micro-inductors the Full Area induction ovens can recognize even the smallest pans, and the hotplate even follows the pan if it is moved. The new dishwashers with ‘speedMatic’ technology only require six litres of water for 13 standard place settings. When the ‘turboSpeed‘ is activated, clean glasses and plates can be returned to the party table after only 20 minutes. With its heat pump technology the iQ 800 dryer can achieve results 50 per cent better than the threshold figure for the energy efficiency A rating.

A world first: Miele is presenting its scented dryer at IFA 2012

“Improved performance, greater comfort and more enjoyment” is the slogan adopted by Miele & Cie KG for its new home appliances at IFA 2012, according to the company’s managing partner Dr. Reinhard Zinkann. They include the world’s first washer-dryer that automatically scents the washing during the drying process. This is achieved by means of a small bottle, which is installed in the door and contains sufficient for 50 cycles. The scents have been developed in a perfumery in Grasse, France. Making its debut at IFA is a new wine conditioning cabinet, equipped with an angled decanting rack to ensure that the wine scale settles at the bottom of the bottle. Wine glasses can be stored in a compartment of the cabinet so that they are properly cooled prior to being used to serve white wine or champagne. The new Miele heat pump dryer requires less than 1.3 kWh of energy for seven kilograms of washing. This makes it 65 per cent more energy efficient than EEC A and accordingly it has an A+++ rating.

Bosch presents energy-saving refrigerators and pet hair vacuum cleaners

The built-in combination fridge-freezer, the SmartCool, made by Robert Bosch Hausgeräte GmbH, is more economical than a low energy lamp”, according to Michael Bohn, Marketing Manager Germany, speaking at IFA 2012. These A+++ units require only 140 kWh, whereas a lamp uses 158 kWh. The company is committed to implementing the energy transition in the home and accordingly Bosch GmbH seeks to educate consumers, says Bohn. As part of this process it has introduced a free internet platform and customer service application entitled “myBosch”. Bosch aims to supply advanced technology and, with its wide range of products, to achieve the maximum spread: 50 of its fridge-freezer models are rated EEC A+++; while 30 of the cooker-oven combinations have energy efficiency that is 30 per cent better than EEC A. And outstanding performance is the main feature of the “Zoo’o ProAnimal” vacuum cleaner with its “Animal 360” set of nozzles. Metz: Boom in products ’made in Germany’

For the traditional Zirndorf-based family-run company Metz the attribute “made in Germany” remains an important factor in the consumer electronics market. Although sales declined by 6% to 124 mi. euros last year the company is hoping to cancel this deficit out this year. Under the slogan “Metz – Tradition and Future” the emphasis at this year’s IFA is on three main aspects: outstanding sound, first class reception and the integration of smart TV solutions. And individuality is an important part of the Metz product range too. “Our Metz manufacturing system is unique, and even allows batches of just a single unit to be produced”, explained Dr. Norbert Kotzbauer, General Manager of Metz-Werke yesterday during the press conference. The company expects to sell some 100,000 television sets this year. Of the company’s total sales, 77% are obtained in the consumer electronics sector, 16% with photo electronics and 7% with plastics technology.
