The activity of the current 60 employees focuses on the development of power semiconductors with analogical and digital functions (Power mixed signal), which are increasingly used in automotive and industrial applications, as well as of safety controllers for smart cards. The activity in Bucharest is coordinated by Infineon Technologies Romania SRL, a company which was established in April 2005 as the Romanian subsidiary of Infineon Technologies Austria AG.

'Our new development centre is a response to the growing demand for intelligent semiconductors for the automotive and industrial applications; here, we are also developing safety controllers for smart cards, which are mainly used in fields like     mobile communications, banking or identification', explained the President of the Infineon'™s Board, Dr. Wolfgang Ziebart, in his speech delivered before an audience of over 100 people. 'The centre in Bucharest will be an additional support for our success in power mixed signal products for automotive and industrial applications and will soon take up a major role'.

The new development centre strengthens the research network in intelligent power semiconductors which currently includes the centres in Villach, Padua, Munich and Graz. These centres will further focus on their cooperation with the most important  producers of auto electronic applications and will foster more product innovations.

The activities in Bucharest related to the development of safety controllers for state-of-the-art smart cards are integrated in the research network with the centres in Munich and Graz. Chip design, software development and testing of these high-tech products are the core business of the centre in Bucharest.

Master curricula are being developed with the Polytechnic University of Bucharest. Thus, the future research and development specialists in semiconductors will be trained there. Another 60 specialists are going to be employed in the Bucharest centre this year.

In April 2005, Thomas Simonis took over the management of the subsidiary and centre in Romania. Between 2002 and 2005, Simonis, who has been working for Infineon since 1998, successfully managed the software development centre in Bangalore / India.
