Market research firm Infonetics Research (http://twitter.com/infonetics) released the first quarter (1Q10) edition of its CMTS and Edge QAM Hardware and Subscribers report.
ANALYST NOTE
"Latin American operators finally ramped up their CMTS purchases in the first quarter of 2010 to expand capacity and greenfield operations, spending four times their quarterly norm. This increase sets a record quarter for CMTS sales in the Central and Latin America region, and pushed the worldwide cable broadband equipment market up 13% in what is typically a down quarter due to fourth quarter budget flushing," notes Jeff Heynen, directing analyst for broadband and video at Infonetics Research.
CMTS AND EDGE QAM REPORT HIGHLIGHTS
•Combined worldwide CMTS and edge QAM revenue increased 13% to $416 million between 4Q09 and 1Q10
•Shipments of CMTS ports to Latin America jumped 330% in 1Q10 from 4Q09
•The CMTS and edge QAM market in EMEA region also saw atypical growth in 1Q10, where operators finally opened their wallets again to add CMTS downstream capacity
•Upstart Casa Systems made significant headway in the CMTS market in 1Q10 and is expected to continue to make headway in the market, especially if Chinese cable operators opt for a DOCSIS architecture
•Cisco’s share of the critical North American CMTS market jumped 21 percentage points in 1Q10 over 4Q09, helped by the availability of its 20x20 card
•The edge QAM market in China represents a broadening opportunity for vendors as cable operators there add edge QAM capacity to transition to digital simulcast and add video on demand (VOD) services
