Telekom Romania has released the sustainability report for 2017, which includes detailed information about the company’s accomplishments and its key projects that support our sustainable development efforts. Every year, the report facilitates the understanding of Telekom Romania’s commitment and the evolution of the group of companies focused on support granted to the digitalization process, social causes and environment protection. 
 
To be certain that our report is in accordance with the requirements of the international standard of sustainability reports GRI and all the aspects and material information have been correctly presented in the report, we have undergone a verification process and we have successfully completed the GRI Material Service.
 
Digitalization is at the core of Telekom Romania’s sustainability efforts and in the past few years the group of companies has initiated numerous projects that have contributed to the improvement of Romanians’ life quality through digitalization. Telekom Romania’s initiatives have focused on inclusion in the digital area of all social categories, through significant investments in the modernization and expansion of the fixed and mobile communication networks, as well as on increasing the connectivity opportunities for the citizens, by launching products and services at prices accessible to all categories of consumers. During 2017 Telekom Romania continued the implementation of the Ro-Net project that targets the expansion of the broad band infrastructure in rural areas that do not have access to high speed internet networks. Ro-Net project is a priority for Telekom Romania, supporting the company’s efforts to contribute to Romania’s digitalization, by reducing the differences between various regions of the country. 
 
Since 2016 Telekom Romania has been at the forefront of the Smart City projects developments, meant to optimize traffic, lighting, safety and air quality conditions in overcrowded cities and to facilitate resources management at local level. In 2017 Telekom Romania implemented two Smart City projects in Constanta and Piatra Neamt, that include intelligent parking solutions, smart lighting, electric car charging stations, air quality monitoring system, smart video surveillance systems and free Wi-Fi.  
 
 
In terms of technology, we continued the expansion of the FTTH and 4G networks, preparing, at the same time, the ground for the 5G technology launch. At the end of 2017, Telekom Romania’s FTTH network covered 2.6 million households, while the 4G network coverage reached 98% of the urban population and 85% of the total population- urban and rural. Digitalization also means the simplification of the information exchange and in 2017, Telekom Romania’s customers witnessed the simplification of the offers as well as the launch of new services offers centered on Internet access facilitation. Through the campaigns #Netliberare- for the residential segment and #Businessliber- for companies, Telekom Romania expanded the communication benefits for the customers and offered unprecedented benefits on the Romanian telecommunication market, such as unlimited mobile data traffic at 4G speed and the elimination of the minimum contractual term for the business environment. 
 
To support the digitalization of Romanian education, Telekom Romania continued the Smart Education projects due to which 150 schools in 23 counties in Romania benefit from the educational management platform Adservio that includes the electronic catalogue, internet and electronic devices useful for the learning process, such as laptops, tablets and projectors. The platform currently counts 200,000 users: parents, pupils and teachers.
 
2017 was the sixth year in a row when Telekom Romania provided children aged between 7 and 16 years, with free IT programming lessons through Coder Dojo workshops. 130 children benefited from such lessons last year.
 
Our desire to get involved in social causes and support people in challenging situations has determined us to set up the Telekom Romania Foundation. For almost 10 years the foundation has been supporting social, humanitarian, educational and environmental projects, as well as campaigns to help the victims of natural disasters. In 2017, the social contribution of Telekom Romania’s foundation was invested in projects that targeted the improvement of vulnerable groups’ life, the development of digital abilities, as well as supporting the development of local communities. 
 
Through teimplici.ro platform, in 2017, 10 projects were implemented. Among these projects: “Edulier- the online platform for the support of children with learning difficulties”, “Therapy through play MIRA for people with neuro-motor disabilities” and “The sensory camera for babies hospitalized on long term.” Last year, like every year, Telekom offered 10 scholarships for students. In June and July 2017 Telekom Romania, in partnership with Smart Atletic organized the seventh edition of the sports event “The biggest sports hour” in Brasov, Bucuresti and Mamaia, through which the company aims to support and promote a healthy life style. 
 
Telekom Romania follows the circular economy strategy of Deutsche Telekom that makes significat efforts to minimize the impact of the operations on the environment. The strategy of the companies within the group is based on four pillars: reduction of energy consumption through efficiency measures, increased quotta of renewable energy sources, reduction of CO2 direct emissions and expansion of the sustainable products portfolio. In 2017 we recycled 1,177 tonnes of waste generated by our activities and we increased the operations regarding energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 20%, against the data traffic.
 
The company’s development is closely related to the contribution of the employees, that Telekom Romania is supporting, providing them with the opportunity to participate in continuous training programmes, which can help them evolve professionally. In 2017, over 2,700 employees participated to various training courses in areas such as mentorship, sales, customer relationship, negotiation, leadership, efficient communication and IT&C. In total, Telekom Romania employees benefited from 224,376 training hours, organized in classrooms and online.
