"Everything Possible" is the theme for The Cable Show this year. It’s a great theme for the National Cable and Telecommunications Association’s big annual event, and it is a great theme for Alcatel-Lucent. Today in Chicago — from the show — Alcatel-Lucent and online video media publishing powerhouse thePlatform are announcing our jointly developed Multiscreen Video Platform.

I haven’t been with Alcatel-Lucent very long. But, despite my short tenure, I can say that the speed with which we finalized the details and closed the deal to jointly launch a world class multiscreen video solution with global appeal shows that everything is, indeed, possible.

This year perhaps as many as 40 million iPads will be bought. Add to that number all the various smart phones, and other tablets, not to mention all the IP-connected laptops and desktops and there are a mind boggling number of screens out there on which to view video content. And there is some good stuff out there online — Hulu, Netflix, and an amazing array of user-generated videos. But making money from all that content to all those devices with a TV-like quality of experience is a challenge for our customers. Enter the Multiscreen Video Platform solution.

But what about the richness and depth of content available on cable and IPTV? Wouldn’t it be great if you could watch all the shows that are available through pay TV in your home on the screens that you carry in your pocket or briefcase? That is another thing our new Multiscreen Video Platform enables. It is not just the selection of pay TV content that is available on all your IP enabled screens — it is also the security and reliability of that content . And when you are watching TV in the comfort of your home, the solution enables you to watch the spectrum of online video previously unavailable with pay TV.

The Multiscreen Video Platfrom solution is the result of a collaboration that brings together Alcatel-Lucent’s IPTV and network expertise, with the video quality and security features provided by our colleagues at Velocix (an Alcatel-Lucent company) as well as the industry-leading online video publishing expertise of thePlatform.
